Red / black grapes

The market for red and black grapes is expanding. Their growing popularity has led to an explosion of varieties and areas where seedless, coloured grapes are grown. These grapes are supplied year-round by growers from all over the world. At times of the year, when the supply of green grapes is reduced, growers also tend to focus on good red or black varieties. The emphasis is on superior taste, a longer shelf life and a better appearance. New and better seedless varieties are finding their way to the market as a result.

Sweet Celebration from IFG, Allison from SNFL and Midnight beauty from Sunworld are just a few promising grape varieties from renowned breeders.

In addition to these newer varieties, there are a number of traditional seedless varieties, such as Crimson seedless, which continue to be very popular with growers and consumers, because of their taste and appearance.

We also work with renowned growers of coloured seeded grapes, such as the Italian Red globe and Palieri. And we also import tasty red and black seeded grapes from South Africa and Peru, including Tropical Delight, Red globe and the black Larochelle.

Green grapes

Green, seedless grapes continue to be popular with consumers. Increasingly larger volumes are finding their way to consumers’ tables with more and more growers and breeders focussing on superior taste, longer shelf life and better appearance.  We supply green, seedless grapes from renowned growers from all over the world year round. Thanks to our expertise in green, seedless grapes, you are assured of the best available variety throughout the year.

We have selected a number of promising and future-proof varieties by leading variety breeders from the abundance of available varieties, including

Autumn Crisp from Sunworld, Sweet Globe from IFG and Timpson from SNFL

We also sell a number of traditional and very successful seedless varieties, of which Thompson seedless is perhaps the best known.

In addition to seedless green grapes, we work with a select group of growers who specialise in green seeded grapes, such as the peerless Italian muscat grapes as well as South African growers who cultivate specific seeded green grape varieties, such as Muscat Delight and Victoria.

Mandarins

Mandarins are DSI’s second largest product category. In the past, mandarins were only available during the winter months, however thanks to continued developments, we can now supply tasty, juicy mandarins year round, from South Africa, Egypt, Morocco and Spain. Consumers can now enjoy later varieties, as a result of the development of cultivars with a longer shelf life, that are both sweet and super easy to peel.

In short, mandarins are on the up and up. A tasty snack that you can enjoy year round, at school, in the gym or on the beach.

DSI can supply all the varieties on the market but these three varieties are the traditional favourites: Clemenule, Nadorcott and Orri.

Minneola

Minneolas are a lesser-known citrus fruit, which is mainly sold in parts of Europe and the Benelux. This juicy fruit is a cross between a mandarin and grapefruit, adding a hint of tartness to your day in addition to boosting your vitamin C levels.  Unlike the majority of our citrus range, minneolas are not available year round. DSI has long-standing collaborations with growers in Israel, Turkey, Egypt, the United States, Peru and South Africa.

Table Oranges

Table oranges have faced stiff competition from mandarins over the last few years, as consumers switch towards easier to peel varieties.
In our experience, however, good table oranges will never go out of fashion due to their fantastic flavour and larger sizing. Many growers are turning to more popular mandarin varieties, so to ensure their survival, table oranges must contain very few seeds, have a full flavour and be simple to peel. We maintain good relationships with reputable growers that supply table oranges of impeccable quality. They are based in traditional orange growing countries such as South Africa, Spain, Morocco and Egypt.

Real Navel oranges are still the most flavoursome table oranges, which include varieties such as Navel, Navel late and Cambria Navel.

Juice Oranges

There is no surprise that the demand for juice oranges is rising exponentially each year, given that an increasing number of places are serving freshly squeezed orange juice and consumers are placing higher importance on living a healthy lifestyle. We supply juice oranges year round from Spain, Morocco, South Africa and Uruguay. But the quality of the oranges from highly reputable Egyptian growers also never fails to amaze our customers.

Vending machines found in retailers that serve a fresh glass of orange juice often require a more precise delivery in terms of size, juice yield, acidity and Brix ratio. By fulfilling these bespoke orders we can showcase why we’re experts in what we do.

Our top 3 most popular juice orange varieties are: Valencia, Salustiana and Midknight.

Lemons

The mere sight of a lemon makes our taste buds tingle. As a citrus specialist, we supply lemons year round from South Africa, Argentina and Spain.

In terms of varieties, the situation has remained largely unchanged. The only development worth sharing are the seedless varieties. The quality, shelf life and use of lemons have fulfilled consumer requirements for many years already so there really is no reason to innovate. Unsurprisingly, demand is highly weather-dependent.

Fresh

Lime

Interestingly enough, limes do not belong to the citrus family. Despite their appearance, similarities to a lemon and their taste, limes are an exotic fruit, rather than a citrus fruit. But when the sun comes out, lime sales go through the roof.

Cocktails, soft drinks and salads are often decorated with a delicious, refreshing slice of lime or drizzled with a squeeze of lime juice. Lime are also increasingly used as an ingredient in various dishes. That is why we supply these wonderfully refreshing exotic fruits from Mexico and Brazil year round.

Tasty

Kiwi

Kiwis are a nutritional powerhouse. We can think of no other fruit that delivers such a vitamin C boost. In addition to packing an impressive dose of vitamin C, kiwis are also a good source of potassium and other important vitamins and minerals. Everyone loves a tasty kiwi. We maintain excellent relationships with kiwi growers from all over the world. As a result, we can supply green kiwis year round from Greece, Italy and Chile and yellow kiwis from Italy at specific times of the year.

Pomelos

Pomelos really stand out. These large, round citrus fruits originally come from Thailand and Malaysia. They also are the largest known citrus fruits. Naturally DSI has included these giants in its range. Yellow pomelos are mainly sourced from China whereas red pomelos are usually grown in Israel.

Delicious, sun-ripened pomelos are jam-packed with vitamin C and are only available from March to October.

Grapefruit

Grapefruit have a loyal fan base due to the balanced sweet and bitter flavours. Grapefruit with the right ratio of freshness/sweetness features as a bestseller in our citrus range and is popular for use as a cooking ingredient and when enjoyed fresh. Besides pink grapefruit, DSI also imports small quantities of White Marsh seedless, one of the oldest white grapefruit varieties. While its taste is comparable to that of the pink grapefruit, the flesh is white.

Most of our growers are based in Israel, Spain and South Africa.  The most sold and most popular pink variety is Star Ruby.

Pineapple

Pineapples always conjure visions of sunny destinations and tropical beaches, which is perfectly logical as they thrive in a tropical, warm climate. We source our pineapple from Costa Rica year-round where we are guaranteed consistently high quality fruit.

Unlike other fruit, pineapples don’t ripen on their own after being picked. You can easily recognise a ripe pineapple because the leaves of the crown come off easily.

Creamy

Avocado

Most people think of avocados when you mention superfoods. The wildly popular oval fruit is incredibly nutritious and packed with unsaturated fatty acids and fibre. There are two types of avocados:  Hass and Green Skin.

Hass is the best-known variety and has brown, bumpy skin. As the fruit ripens the skin turns darker until it is almost purplish black. The flesh of the avocado is typically firm and slightly creamy; however Green Skin avocados are less fatty and don’t discolour. Well-known Green Skin varieties include Fuerte, Pinkerton and Zutano.

Plums

Plums come in various types, colours and flavours, and within DSI there are a number of growers who focus specifically on growing these delicious fruits. These true stone fruit specialists pay a lot of attention to innovation and product development. Thanks to our valuable cooperation with them, we can offer plums all year round.

The developments in the field of varieties are gigantic. Ever stronger varieties with a longer shelf life are being developed and this ensures that the consumer receives a tastier and higher quality product.

During the overseas season, we mainly work with growers from South Africa, but we also work in partnership with growers from Chile. Throughout the European plum season we have close contact with growers from Spain and Italy.

Together with our partners within the plum growing industry, we are able to provide a beautiful and attractive programme in terms of both quality and quantity.
